OPC
SERVER
An unlimited
runtime license for the OPC Server Software requires purchase
of a license. The purchase can be charged to a customer's account
or credit card like any other NEWPORT product.
To activate this license, you must first download the program
or install from CD-ROM, and provide NEWPORT with the unique
Installation Specific Code that will be presented within the
installation process. If you choose to purchase a license On-Line,
include this Installation Specific Code number in the "special
instructions" for your order. As soon as possible during normal
business hours, or the next business day, NEWPORT will provide
you with the specific License Activation Code.
What is an OPC Server?
OPC Servers are hardware drivers that are written to a common
standard, OPC or "OLE for Process Control". OPC compliant programs
(OPC Clients) for HMI, SCADA, DAS, etc. are available from NEWPORT,
OMEGA, Wonderware, iconics, Intellution, Rockwell Automation,
and National Instruments, among others.
The OPC Foundation offers this explanation: "OPC (originally
OLE for Process Control) is an industry standard created with
the collaboration of a number a leading worldwide automation
and hardware software suppliers working in cooperation with
Microsoft. The standard defines method for exchanging realtime
automation data among PC-based clients using Microsoft operating
systems. The organization that manages this standard is the
OPC Foundation.
"The OPC Specification is a non-proprietary technical specification
that defines a set of standard interfaces based upon Microsoft’s
OLE/COM technology. The application of the OPC standard interface
makes possible interoperability between automation/control applications,
field systems/devices and business/office applications.
"Traditionally, each software or application developer was required
to write a custom interface, or server/driver, to exchange data
with hardware field devices. OPC eliminates this requirement
by defining a common, high performance interface that permits
this work to be done once, and then easily reused by HMI, SCADA,
Control and custom applications."-- www.opcfoundation.org
